In a seminar on the relationship between depression, heart disease and stroke, in Jakarta, Dr Suryo Dharmono explained that the combination of depression and cardiovascular disease, narrowing of the arteries or stroke may increase mortality.

“Several studies on depression in patients with cardiovascular disease showed that the prevalence is relatively high at 18-60%. Epidemiological studies also showed higher mortality of patients with cardiovascular disease also suffer from depression,” he said.

“Depression in stroke patients showed the prevalence of approximately 27-45%. In patients with stroke, depression will slow the healing process, a deterioration of physical symptoms, interfere with rehabilitation, and increased mortality,” said Suryo.
