Anyone who has watched or followed Ellen DeGeneres, the famous talk show hose, knows she suffers from back pain, as do many Americans, but there are ways to help support anyone with the debilitating challenges of any back injury or condition.
Back pain can come in a variety of forms from a misaligned spine and rhomboid muscle spasms, to sacroiliitis, which can affect the entire muscular system in the back. The first step is to receive a correct diagnosis. Often times, the area that the back pain is felt in can be the body’s response to underlying problem. As with the sacroliliac, if someone suffers an injury to this joint, it can cause severe muscle pain in the muscles on either side of the back. Also, poor abdominal muscle strength can cause people to use their back when it isn’t necessary, overexerting the back and making it weaker in general.
The best treatment for back pain is rest, but that only alleviates the pain and doesn’t completely manage it like certain exercises or lifestyle changes. Physical therapy is the most common treatment, and may accompany moderate to high dose pain killers depending on the severity of the pain. When being treated with physical therapy a variety of methods are used, but specifically prescribed based on the cause of the back pain. For muscle problems as a result of sacroiliitis, Pilates is one treatment method known to rehabilitate the back. Other forms of treatment include a specific exercise regime, like combining walking, swimming, and Yoga or weight-lifting.
